About the work: A portrait of friendship across distance, The Colours She Leaves Behind is a bright, emotional exploration of presence and release.
I painted this piece in honour of my best friend Ashley, and the kind of connection that remains, even when someone moves across the world. It’s a love letter to autumn (her favourite season), the Fitzroy Gardens where we spent time, and the glow of a moment when everything feels alive, bursting with colour and warmth.
Rather than depicting her literally, I wanted the work to feel like her energy - shimmering, vibrant, and full of light.
Originally exhibited at BSIDE Gallery in May 2025, this is one of the most personal portraits I’ve painted.
